Art Therapy is a hybrid psychotherapy profession that integrates mental health care and informed art practice. It is influenced by the fields of psychology, psychiatry and education.

Embarking on this journey is a process where a therapeutic relationship is formed and explored between the patient, their created images and the therapist.

Art psychotherapy combines the verbal part of therapy sessions while also exploring a way to express beyond words. The creation of images is a powerful tool to communicate non-verbally as clients are encouraged to explore and experiment with a wide range of art materials.

what if a person doesn't feel ready in-session?I respects every individual's pace to confront their emotions. By remaining present, holding space, containing and supporting the process. A session may include talk therapy alongside art-making, allowing for transformative and healing insights. I look to create a non-judgmental, non-directive space that isn't concerned with the aesthetic of images but rather the unfolding itself.
-
who is this for?People of all ages, backgrounds and experiences, in a variety of settings can benefit from this modality. The potential of using the creative process to generate images or having the opportunity to freely create is something every individual is capable of as an innate and natural ability.

what are some myths regarding art therapy?it is not about interpreting the artwork since we each have a different subjective view on what certain images or colours may symbolise based on our own unique experiences it is not an activity merely for relaxing, leisure or recreation; as it gives way to uncover uncomfortable, visceral or painful occurrences from the present or past it does not require previous art education, ability or experience
